Member dons dress to raise $$ for charity

By DEBORAH A. MILES
It’s been said a red dress can turn heads. When a man vows to wear one running for charity, it turns pledges into gold.

PEF member Wally Powers did just that. This labor services representative at the state Department of Labor (DOL) in Ithaca raised $1,375 for the American Heart Association (AHA) Run/Walk held in late February at Utica College.

Powers said that after his stepfather passed away last year from heart problems, it became a personal crusade to raise money for the AHA.

“I told people if I could raise more than $400, I would wear a red dress while running,” he said. “With this extra incentive, things just took off and got a life of its own. I reached $400 in no time flat, then I realized I’m committed to wearing a red dress.”

More than 90 people including family, friends and co-workers from 15 different DOL offices statewide made a pledge for Powers.

Grateful for this support, Powers contacted local businesses for donations to a raffle drawing. He acquired a dozen items, including a golf umbrella, a month’s membership to a health club, gift certificates and lunches for two. “This was my way of saying thanks to all who pledged money, and to give them a chance to win something too,” he said.

Among the 7,100 people who participated in the Run/Walk, Powers, who ran five miles in on-and-off rain, was easily identified by his eye-catching ensemble.

Powers said, “I got the idea of wearing a red dress from the Hash House Harriers, an international running organization. They have sponsored events where members wear red dresses and run from bar to bar.”
