2003 PEF
Convention raises international travel issues
By SHERRY HALBROOK and LINDA RUBIN
The 2003 PEF Convention will be held in Montreal, Canada,
September 14-17 at the Le Centre Sheraton Hotel.
If you plan to attend, carefully review all of the
information regarding this years convention.
Because this event will be in Canada, you will need to
comply with restrictions and requirements for travel into
Canada and for return to the United States. These
requirements have increased substantially since the
terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Although at this time passports are not required, PEF
strongly recommends that you obtain one. The cost of a
passport is $95 (including the photo). Payment for the
passport is your responsibility.
Birth certificates with a raised seal and a current
drivers license may be sufficient for entry into
Canada. If you are a naturalized US citizen, you should
carry this certificate.
All PEF members and staff attending the convention should
check with both their automobile and health insurance
carriers to make sure they are covered while in Canada.
Bringing the
kids?
Travelers visiting Canada with children should carry the
following:
identification for each child, which is similar to
identification required for adults; and
a letter of permission from the parents of any
children accompanying the travelers for whom they do not
have legal custody.
Divorced parents with shared custody rights also should
carry legal documents establishing their status.
Non-US citizens
If you are not a US citizen, but are a permanent resident
of the US, you must bring your Green Card.
Temporary residents of the US (anyone who carries a
Temporary Resident Card, Form 1-688, or Employment
Authorization Card, 1-688A or 1-688B) must carry a
passport and may also require a visa, depending on their
country of citizenship
Oops!
If you have a criminal record, including a DWI
conviction, you may be refused entry into Canada. You may
contact the Canadian consulate in either New York City or
Buffalo to obtain further information regarding a form or
waiver that must be completed and approved:

Other concerns
Although it is rare, Canadian immigration officials may
prevent the entry of visitors who:
appear to pose a health risk; or
raise doubts as to their ability to support
themselves and their dependents while in Canada; or
raise doubts as to their willingness and means to
return to the US.
Return to US
The US Immigration and Naturalization Service also has
requirements for returning residents, and for business
and general visitors.
Acceptable proofs of US citizenship include: a valid or
expired US passport; or an original or certified copy of
a birth certificate or naturalization certificate.
US voters registration cards are not accepted as
proof of citizenship.
