Brochures, CD in the works too
Nurses planning lobby day, conference events for May

By TRACY SCHOLZ
If you want to make meaningful changes in conditions for yourselves and your patients, plan now to head to Albany on May 5 for the PEF Nurses Lobby Day.

“Nurses In Crisis is the theme for our 2003 Lobby Day,” said June Edwards, co-chair of the PEF Statewide Nurses Committee. “We’ve accomplished a lot with our previous lobbying events, and we hope this one will be even more successful.” Watch the PEF Website, Information Line and your next Communicator for details on this important event.

“We are also organizing a PEF Nurses Conference Day for May 15-16 at the PEF New York City office,” said Debbie Egel, also co-chair of the Nurses Committee. “The conference will deal with topics such as smallpox vaccinations for health care workers, infection control, injured workers, the Employees Assistance Program (EAP) and other issues.”

A second conference day is planned for the fall in the Syracuse area.

In addition to planning the lobbying and conferences, the committee is preparing a brochure on nursing issues. This brochure will contain information about actions PEF has taken or plans to take on the issues of mandatory overtime, staffing levels and occupational health and safety. This brochure will be distributed to all PEF nurses.

The Joint PEF-NYS Committee on Nursing Issues also has been working diligently on various nursing issues since December 2001. This joint committee has made progress addressing recruitment, retention and retraining for nurses, by establishing specific access to the state Career Mobility Office.

And the the joint committee has suggested topics, as well as alternative approaches to workshop design and delivery, for the Public Service Workshop Program.

The joint committee is also taking a close look at issues such as compensation, best practices in various state facilities, reward and recognition programs and an “Abandonment in Nursing” memo sent out by the state Education Department’s Office of the Professions. PEF and the state recently approved a Health Workforce Retraining Initiative grant, which they are funding through the joint Professional Development Committee. This grant is being used to create a brochure and CD that will focus on retaining and recruiting more nurses into state service.

Stay informed about all of these activities and more that may affect you and your colleagues! Get on PEF’s RN e-mail distribution list today. Send your name, e-mail address and home address to

NEW COORDINATOR — Doris (Dee) Dodson receives the oath of office for Region 12 coordinator from PEF President Roger Benson. Dodson was sworn in at PEF headquarters in Albany in January. She will serve the remaining unexpired term of Ruth Gaines who retired last fall. That term ends in July. No further special elections will be held to fill any vacancies that occur on current terms for statewide, regional or Executive Board offices. New terms for all of these offices will begin following the regular PEF triennial elections being held this spring. — Photo by Stephen Chamberlain
