PEF
magazine, TV ad take bows in national competitions
PEF communications efforts were honored in two national
competitions last year.
The American Federation of Teachers Communications
Association (AFTCA) awarded The Communicator first place
awards for best news story, best feature story and best
editorial. The magazine also drew a second place for best
photo. And a PEF TV ad garnered a second place award as
well.
The Communicators use of
graphics took a third-place award in the annual
journalism contest held by the International Labor
Communications Association (ILCA). And the
magazines coverage of the World Trade Center
attacks, as well as an article on assaults on members at
work, drew honorable mention.
The AFTCA judges gave the top news story honors to an
article by PEF Director of Public Relations Denyce Duncan
Lacy titled PEF members battle bioterrorism
in the December 2000-January 2001 issue of The Communicator.
This is a terrific article! the judges said.
An excellent, thorough and very timely piece on an
issue of immediate concern to members and the public. It
is very well done.
An article in the July-August 2001 issue about Rockland Childrens
Psychiatric Center by Editor Sherry Halbrook garnered the
top feature story honors.
Titled Move up the road could leave childrens
safety, hope behind, they called this article a
very convincing ... very touching article on the
needs of children being sacrificed to the state
budget.
An article written by former PEF nurse organizer Lenore
Boris titled Nursings image suffers; Too much
emphasis on caring, too little on skills took top
honors for best editorial. The AFTCA judges praised it as
a very excellent, heartfelt piece that points out
public perception and the need to change it.
A photo layout designed by graphic
artist Mario Bruni of PEF members who died at the World
Trade Center superimposed over a picture of the PEF
memorial tribute to them at Niagara Falls in November 2001 received second-place honors from
the AFTCA judges, who praised the emotion it expressed.
PEFs Hometown Heroes
television ad campaign of last winter was the second-place winner
in the electronic media competition. You say a lot
in a very short time, the AFTCA judges commented.
Beautiful! It shows very effectively the
contributions of diverse public employees.
The ILCA judges were struck with magazines February 2001 cover by Bruni of a boxing glove
smashing a clock, giving it third-place honors for best
use of graphics.
Lacys article in that issue about workplace assaults drew honorable mention in the best
news story competition. And in the unique performance
category, the magazine received honorable mention for its
coverage in the October 2001 issue of how members were affected by
and responded to the World Trade Center attacks.
