BACKSTAGE PLANNING Joyce Degenhardt, member of the
PEF nurses committee, meets with PEF nurses Diana Dixon,
Jemma Marie Hanson and PEF Research Associate Arlene
Zilkowski in early February to prepare for the
videotaping of a new Nurse CD/brochure. The brochure, due
for completion at the end of March, is designed to
stimulate interest in nursing careers with the state.
Lots of events,
materials on tap for PEF nurses
This is a busy time for PEF nurses, with lobbying and
conference days planned, and lots of new and updated
publications for nurses in the works.
The PEF-NYS Joint Committee on Nursing Issues has
arranged for the updating of both the Nursing
Degree Guide and the Guide to Part Time
Employment.
And its creating a Nurse
CD/brochure to promote pride in nursing and stimulate
interest in nursing careers with the state, which it
hopes to complete by late March.
This CD will feature a diverse group of nurses from
throughout state service and it will highlight the many
career opportunities available, said June Edwards,
co-chair of the PEF Nurses Committee and one of the
unions representatives on the Joint Committee.
And the joint committee has been working with the Public
Service Workshop Program to develop workshops on topics
of professional interest to nurses and come up with new
and alternative approaches to workshop design and
delivery. Some of these innovative workshops are being
offered on a pilot basis on Long Island and in Buffalo.
PEF committee plans events
Our PEF Nurses Committee is updating its brochure
for nurses and is planning for its lobby day on May 5 in
Albany, said Debbie Egel, the other co-chair
of that committee.
The Lobby Day has been changed from its original date of
May 6.
Nurses in Crisis is the theme of this
years lobby day and our main focus will be on
mandatory overtime and safe staffing, Egel said.
The PEF committee is also planning a Conference Day for
May 15 at the New York City PEF office. Topics will
include nurse abandonment, bioterrorism, the impaired
worker and the abused/battered worker.
