PEF events to celebrate Women’s History Month
By DEBORAH A. MILES
International Women’s Day was first celebrated in Europe March 8, 1911. Since
that time, almost a century ago, women have taken time in March to focus on new
challenges and embrace their place in the world.
PEF women will have an opportunity to celebrate Saturday, March 28, at the
Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies in New York City from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
Germaine Greco, chair of the PEF’s Women’s Committee, has organized a day full
of appealing activities and speakers.
“The committee wanted to do something special this year,” Greco said. “The day
will be fun and empowering. Everyone in attendance will surely take something
back with them.”
The event kicks-off with a workshop on meditation and relaxation, followed by a
workshop on financial management and how women can best plan for their
retirements.
The program features a guest appearance by TV host and beauty expert Betty
Leigh, as well as live music by Bev Grant and the Dissident Daughters.
The event will include a brunch and a talk by Beverly Fortune, an associate
publisher at the Long Island Press and vice-president of The Morey Organization,
Long Island’s largest privately-owned media company. Fortune is noted for being
instrumental in giving a “face” to many of Long Island’s not-for-profits through
a news column, “the Fortune 52.”
All PEF women and guests are invited to attend. A $20 registration fee will be
collected at the door. A portion of the fee will be donated to the Belmont Child
Care Association. To register, e-mail
Kpartridge@pef.org
.
In addition, a one-day Region 8 women’s conference will be held Saturday, March
7, at the NYSUT building in Latham from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Speakers will
include local labor leaders, including a panel discussion with Kathleen Scales,
executive director of the Capital District Area Labor Federation.
The cost is $10 for PEF members and $20 for non-members. To register, contact
Sandi Hunt at (518) 785-1900 ext. 215.
