State AFL-CIO offers $8,000 scholarship

If your son or daughter is graduating from high school this year, and plans to pursue a career in labor relations or a related field, they are eligible to apply for an $8,000 college scholarship from the state AFL-CIO.

The winner, who will receive annual payments of $2,000 for four consecutive years, is chosen on the basis of academic merit and an essay on how the state AFL-CIO functions as “The People’s Lobby.” Finalists will be interviewed.

Completed applications must be submitted with required documentation and essay by May 15.

The winner and all finalists will be notified of the decision in June.

Nominees sought to fill E. Bd. seat

Nominations are sought by the PEF Special Elections Committee for candidates to fill a vacancy in Seat 195 on the PEF Executive Board.

This seat represents PEF members at the state Health Department main offices in PEF Region 8, including those at the following worksites: Rensselaer County, the Glens Falls office; 2 University Place; 1215 Western Avenue; 733 Broadway; Washington Avenue; Albany County Health Department; Sterling Winthrop; Syranac; and other off-site locations.

Petitioning begins April 22 and ends May 13 to nominate candidates for this seat. You must have been a PEF member since November 14, 2001 to run for this board seat. To sign a nominating petition, you must have been a PEF member since March 29, 2002.

If more than one eligible candidate is nominated for the seat, a special election will be held. Ballots will be mailed to members of that constituency on May 28, returnable to the American Arbitration Association (AAA) by June 18. You must have been a PEF member since May 13, 2002 to be eligible to vote in this election.
