Stonehill’s
way was a good one
It takes something out of the ordinary to have a New York City street named
after you, but then, PEF retiree Bob Stonehill always stood out for his public
service, his caring, humility and humor.
The NYC Council voted unanimously last year to name the corner of Avenue N and
Schenectady Avenue in the Old Mill Basin section of Brooklyn “Bob Stonehill
Way.”
The posthumous honor came primarily for his service in the Flatlands Volunteer
Ambulance Corps which stands on that corner. He helped found it and served it
until his death in August 2004 from a heart attack which he suffered while on
the phone with the Corps’ dispatcher.
“Bob was dedicated in his service to PEF, too,” said PEF Executive Board Member
Bill Sachs, a close friend and fellow senior professional conduct investigator
of Stonehill’s at the state Education Department’s Office of Professional
Discipline in New York.
Active in PEF Division 349 from its inception in 1986, Stonehill was a steward,
treasurer, and newsletter editor. He was a convention delegate from 1988 to
2002, when he retired.
Stonehill served on the SED Health and Safety Committee, Region 10 leadership
committees, was a PEF political action liaison and helped found the PEF Jewish
Committee. — Sherry Halbrook
