PEF trustee receives LCLAA award
The NYC Labor Council for Latin American Advancement honored PEF Trustee Julio Munoz in January for his long-term commitment to the labor movement and his leadership in the struggle for workers’ rights, civil rights and social justice.

Munoz’s involvement in civic activities began in 1972 when he helped organize a volunteer youth summer program in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, and also protested against the closing of Bronx municipal hospitals.

He has been an active member in PEF for the past decade and has been unwavering in his commitment to the Bronx community.

He has been chairman of the New York State Hispanic Housing Coalition, an elected District Leader for the Bronx County Democratic Party, and part of a parent/leadership group at Christopher Columbus High School.

“PEF is proud to have Julio as a member and trustee,” said PEF President Ken Brynien. “He has enhanced the lives and working conditions of Latin American workers, as well as all working men and women.”

Munoz said it felt good to receive the award because the event introduced PEF to a lot of local unions.

“There are a lot of locals in NYC that don’t realize there are two major unions in the state, PEF and the Civil Service Employees Association. I was glad PEF received some recognition,” Munoz said. — Debora A. Miles
