Scanlon scholarship applications due soon
Applications for the Judi Scanlon Scholarship are now available at the PEF Region 1 office, and must be returned on or before Monday, May 19.

Since Scanlon, a nurse and intensive case manager in Buffalo was slain during a home visit in 1998, Region 1 PEF members and her family wanted to keep her memory alive. They held a golf tournament in September 2003, and awarded two $1,000 scholarships in her name the following year. And, they have kept the scholarship going.

The scholarship is open to all Region 1 PEF members, spouses and children who are pursuing a career in health care.

“This would include nursing, pharmacy, social work and psychology,” said Barbara Rock, PEF Division 180 council leader. “Two of the previous scholarship winners are currently attending D’Youville College, Judi’s alma mater.”

The scholarships are awarded in the spring and the winners are selected through a random drawing.

“The scholarship keeps in the forefront the health and safety issues facing nurses and case managers,” Rock said. “It is a way to say Judi’s death has not been forgotten nor is work she did to help others.”

The money for the scholarship is raised through an annual golf tournament which is open to PEF members from all regions.

“Members who participate come from as far away as the Binghamton area,” Rock said. “It is a good day of fun and keeps the issues in the forefront.”

The next golf tournament is scheduled for September 10 at the Batavia Country Club.
