PEF to hold nurses shoe collection for May 14, 2001 Press Conference

In conjunction with the PEF Nurses Lobby Day May 15, PEF is holding a press conference. Due to conflicts with other events occurring on May 15, the PEF press conference will be held on May 14, the date the S/W Nurses Committee meeting. The press conference will be held at noon on May 14, on the steps of the State Capitol (east side).

To dramatize the short staffing problems in a visual display, the plan is to line up 1,000 pairs of old nursing shoes on the steps of the Capitol. The 1,000 represents the roughly 8-10% vacancy rate statewide. Hopefully, some of the shoes will have "foot notes" -- nurse's personal messages to legislators -- tucked in the shoe.

We need your help collecting shoes. The enclosed signs are provided for you to establish collection boxes in your facility. Please encourage colleagues to bring in their old nursing shoes. The public relations effort will only be effective if we have enough shoes. See set-up diagram at right.

Please collect as many shoes as possible between now and noon May 8. Questions can be directed to Denyce at 1-800-342-4306 ext. 274 (email:
dlacy@pef.org), or Lenore at ext. 228 (email:lboris@pef.org).

PEF Nurses:
Take a stand for patients’ quality care!
Tell state lawmakers to fill our shoes

As PEF nurses, we stand for quality care.

Let’s tell legislators in Albany we need better staffing to care for patients in today’s changing world of health care.

Make your message heard by delivering it to elected leaders — in our nursing shoes!

By presenting state legislators with thousands of PEF nursing shoes — each pair representing shoes that must be filled if patients are to receive the quality health care they need.

We can draw much-needed attention to the serious problem of understaffing in our hospitals and other health care institutions.

Send a personal “Footnote” to legislators in Albany.

It’s easy!

Just write your message, fold it and tuck it into your pair of shoes, and place them in the drop box located in your facility.

We’ll take care of the rest!

Thank you for “stepping up” for a quality care issue.
