Don’t tear apart a mentally ill person’s home advantage.

New York state’s “shared staff” workers give their clients with mental illness expert care through home visits, day treatment and case management.

They also provide emergency room screening services to local mental health programs — often in counties that need additional financial resources to deliver these services.

But a state budget plan to phase out the state’s funding for the shared staff program threatens to rip apart the bonds that help the mentally ill recover, and keeps them close to home.

These highly-trained nurses, social workers and other professional caregivers are a vital component of the state’s mental health system.

We must ensure that the state keeps these high-quality services by demanding the proper state budget funding continues. Let’s keep giving the mentally ill the care they need and deserve.
Keep the shared staffing program in one piece.
