Who’s PEF’s top privatization buster for ’03?

Know someone who’s taken the lead in fighting privatization? It’s time to tell everyone about their efforts.

Nominations are being accepted for PEF’s Fight Back against Privatization Award.

“This union is constantly struggling the state’s attempts to hand off its services and responsibilities to private organizations that will not be subject to the same direct accountability to New Yorkers and their elected leaders,” said PEF President Roger Benson.

“We need PEF leaders who will stand up and fight these attacks on merit and fitness and public service,” Benson said. “It’s fitting that we honor those who do.”

What does it take to win the award?

Previous recipients of the PEF Privatization Fight-Back Award include Tom Grace, Dennis Beagle and Ed Snow.

Grace called attention to SEFA “charities” that competed with PEF members for state work.

Beagle went to Washington to fight attempts to privatize state services to veterans.

And Snow blew the whistle on a state plan to allow a contractor to duplicate some of the services already being provided by PEF members at Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office sites.
