Hevesi has earned PEF Retirees’ support for re-election
to state comptroller’s post
PEF has endorsed state Comptroller Alan Hevesi for re-election and PEF Retirees
joins in enthusiastically supporting him.
The comptroller is the sole trustee of the Common Retirement Fund (CRF) — our
pension program. Thus, we cannot overstate the importance of this office for
state retirees, future retirees and their families.
Since Hevesi took office in 2003, the fund’s value has increased from $95
billion to approximately $140 billion, which certainly gives PEF retirees a
stronger sense of security.
Hevesi has also insisted the state and other public employers throughout New
York maintain their legally mandated contributions to the pension system.
The state comptroller also heads the state Department of Audit and Control,
making him the state’s chief fiscal watchdog.
Hevesi has championed greater fiscal oversight of public funds. And he has
joined with state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in proposing legislation
requiring strict adherence to the State Finance Law.
The PEF Retirees support Hevesi’s efforts to protect the public. He has insisted
the citizens of New York receive the highest quality goods and services at the
most reasonable cost from responsible vendors.
One can only hope and expect that less waste in government and healthier state
finances will equate to a diminished tax burden, more effective government and a
better quality of life for the people of New York.
Hevesi has maintained that portions of the CRF should be used to stimulate the
state’s economy. We hope he will support an enhanced cost-of-living allowance
for state retirees. What better way to stimulate the entire state economy?
We need individuals in elected office who care about workers and retirees, not
the special interests that benefit the rich and powerful.
That’s why we support PEF’s endorsement of Alan Hevesi’s re-election as our
state comptroller.
