PEF
members bring Benson team back for third term
By DENYCE DUNCAN LACY
For the first time in the unions 24-year history,
PEF members have re-elected an administration to a third
term.
On May 7, PEFs Elections Committee completed its
review of nominating petitions for PEFs triennial
elections and announced that President Roger Benson,
Secretary-Treasurer Jane Hallum and Vice Presidents
Patricia Baker, Ken Brynien and Joe Fox received 10,215
valid members signatures twice the number
required to become certified candidates. There were no
challengers for any of those offices.
Under PEFs election rules, in order to be listed on
the ballot for election, candidates must collect the
signatures of 10 percent of the members in the
constituencies in which they are seeking election. For
statewide races, a minimum of 5,107 valid signatures were
needed.
We sincerely appreciate this vote of
confidence, Benson said on behalf of the statewide
officers. It means PEFs advocacy for quality
public services and fair treatment of our members will
remain uninterrupted for the next three years. We will
continue to fight for stronger contracts, job security
and retirement reform, and we will continue to put the
needs of the members first.
We thank the members for giving us the opportunity
to continue serving them, and look forward to building on
PEFs accomplishments over the past six years,
Hallum added.
According to the Elections Committee, candidates for 11
regional coordinator positions and 80 Executive Board
seats also received enough valid signatures to be seated
without an election. Elections will be held for the
regional coordinator post in Region 12 and for 23
Executive Board seats.
Balloting for contested elections begins June 2 and ends
June 23, and the votes will be counted the next day.
(For details on all the elections, see the PEF Election Guide).
