PEF nurses throughout the state were recognized and honored in May as a way to
celebrate their profession and mark National Nurses Week — May 6-12.
The 25th anniversary of Nurse Appreciation Day at Rockland Psychiatric Center in
Orangeburg was observed with an event hosted by the center and Rockland
Children’s Psychiatric Center, the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric
Research and the Blaisdell Addiction Treatment Center.
The theme of the May 10 event was “25 years of strength, commitment and
compassion.” It included exhibits, networking, a luncheon and a ceremony.
PEF Division 235 member Liz Falco, a nurse administrator 1 at Rockland PC, said
280 nurses and others attended the event, including 15 nurses from Helen Hayes
Hospital (HHH).
“This year, we had 47 applications and, from that number, six registered nurses
and one LPN received Excellence in Practice awards,” Falco said. “Scholarships
were awarded to two nursing students — one studying at Dominican College and one
at Rockland Community College.”
Four PEF nurses were among those who received a plaque — Maureen Miele and Kerry
Sokolohorsky from HHH, and George Padiyedathu and Andrea Sturdivant from
Rockland PC.
PEF leaders serve nurses
At SUNY Downstate Medical Center, nurses were treated to a breakfast — an annual
tradition and one of the hospital’s biggest functions.
PEF Vice Presidents Joe Fox and Pat Baker, and Region 11 Coordinator Jemma
Marie-Hanson served the nurses their morning meal to let them know they are
valued.
Donald Morgenstern, PEF Executive Board member for SUNY Downstate and Division
198 council leader, said 300 of the 630 PEF nurses attended the luncheon.
“That number doesn’t sound amazing until you figure that most of our people work
12 hour-shifts, for three days and then four days off. We have about one-fourth
of our members here at any given moment. So, when you realize people attended on
their day off, stayed over from the night-shift, or came in early, it was a good
turnout.”
Nurses also received a PEF Downstate cap, followed by an information day that
included information from PEF Membership Benefits.
Training, then comic relief
Nurses at Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Services Office had a week of
training activities beginning May 7 and ending with a recognition event and
luncheon.
John Prince, PEF Region 3 Executive Board OMRDD representative, said, “We did
the training via video conferencing. During the course of the week, more than 50
nurses took advantage of the opportunity.”
The luncheon, however, attracted 110 nurses and was held at the Comix Cafe. The
event included an hour of networking with nurse managers and words of
recognition from PEF Division 259 Council Leader Randi D’Antonio, Division 259
Treasurer Shannon Wagner and PEF Division 246 Council Leader Greg Lazzaro.
There were also door prizes, give-aways and entertainment by a comedian who told
a lot of “nurse” jokes.
