OGS members fully mobilized

By DEBORAH A. MILES
Recognizing the need to establish greater communication among PEF members who work at the state Office of General Services, Division 179 leaders launched a mobilization effort nearly four years ago that has paid off.

The division is now fully mobilized, reaching more than 700 members, and ready to participate in future PEF campaigns.

“We wanted everyone to be in the loop,” said Joe Laviano, council leader. “We began with training by PEF’s Mobilization Department, then heightened our communications with phone calls and e-mails.”

“We have a system in place that provides rapid notification,” said Tom Comanzo, PEF Executive Board representative for OGS. “It took us a while to get things done, but Joe Laviano and Greg McBride (assistant council leader), made sure the communications system is in place and done right.”

Laviano said the last contract fight and health and safety issues initiated by PEF headquarters worked as “a catalyst to show us how communications would be a benefit.”

Along with a mobilization team that is structured to contact each member, the division also launched a newsletter under the direction of member Rich Layton.

“We have learned the value of communication,” Laviano added. “It is one of the strongest tools we have, and we need to use it.”
