Meningitis vaccine recommended for college students in
dorms
If you have a son or daughter who will be at college and
living in a dormitory or other group living environment,
he or she should consider having a meningitis
vaccination.
A study recently published in the Journal of the American
Medical Association found college freshmen living in
dormitories have the highest risk of contracting
potentially fatal bacterial meningitis and should be
targeted for vaccination.
Freshmen in dormitories may be exposed to the bacteria
more often than other students, because they live in such
close quarters. Once immunized, your student will be
protected for three to five years.
Unfortunately, the Empire Plan does not cover meningitis
vaccinations. PEF proposed adding meningitis to the list
of adult immunizations covered by the Empire Plan, but
the state refused.
Make sure you know the cost before the vaccination is
given. Also check with the college to find out if the
vaccination is given on campus at a reduced cost.
If you are enrolled in an HMO, call it to find out if the
meningitis vaccination is covered.
More information about meningitis is available on the Web
sites for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and for the American College Health Association.
