Balloting brings 13 newcomers to E-Board

By SHERRY HALBROOK

When the PEF Executive Board meets in August, quite a few new members will stand and raise their right hands to be sworn in for their first three-year terms on the board.

When the American Arbitration Association counted the votes on June 24 that were cast in the PEF Triennial elections for 24 contested board seats, 13 of the winners were not incumbents and many were being elected to the board for the first time. Winners of the other 11 board races were incumbents.

“PEF is well served by a good mix of experienced leaders and new blood on the Executive Board,” said PEF President Roger Benson, who ran unopposed for a third term and was, therefore, automatically re-elected. “Many veterans of the board took advantage of the early retirement option and left state service this year. It’s great to know enthusiastic members are ready and willing to step up to that challenge and take up the responsibilities. We remaining veterans look forward to welcoming and working with them in guiding PEF through the next three years.”

Ballots were also counted for the Region 12 coordinator post, and Dee Dodson was re-elected. She had won a special election for the vacant office less than a year ago, to serve the remaining months of that expiring three-year term following Ruth Gaines’ retirement.

New members elected to the board in June are:
• Susan Kent (Seat 90 — Education);
• James Close (Seat 120 — Environmental Conservation;
• Richard Mata (Seat 145 — Parole);
• Bellew McManus (Seat 170 — Executive);
• Thomas Fahey (Seat 180 — Health);
• Paul Todd Fryer (Seat 205 — Insurance);
• Rocco Brindisi (Seat 207 — Labor);
• Paul Kubiak (Seat 225 — Labor);
• Barbara Rock (Seat 260 — Mental Hygiene);
• Genette Hollander (Seat 437 — Family Assistance);
• Joseph Kost (Seat 445 — Family Assistance);
• Susan Shay (Seat 510 — Transportation); and
• Jerry Jobson (Seat 520 — Transportation).

For a complete list of all of the offices and board seats which were filled automatically by the sole certified candidates for them, check the
PEF Election Guide in the June 2003 issue of The Communicator.
That guide also contains the full description of board seat constituencies, and the list of all the candidates who competed in the June balloting.
