Thank your legislators

Every member of the state Senate and a substantial majority of the state Assembly showed uncommon courage and determination in the recent state budget battle with the governor.

Although most of the legislators voted for the initial budget restorations, only two Republicans in the Assembly — Pat Casale of the 108th District and Joel Miller of the 102nd District — voted for all of the overrides sought by PEF.

Tom Kirwan and Patrick Manning joined them in voting to override the Transportation Dept. veto.

Except Manning, all of those lawmakers also voted for the override on health and mental hygiene funding, as did Assembly Republicans Tom Alfano, Robert Barra, David McDonough, Matthew Mirones, Maureen O’Connell and Robert Straniere.

The Assembly Republicans who voted for the Education Dept. override were: Alfano, Barra, Casale, Kirwan, Manning, McDonough, Miller and O’Connell.

“These courageous legislators heard our call for increasing revenues and restoring funding,” said PEF President Roger Benson. “It’s important we recognize and thank them.”

He suggested you:
• Send the legislators “thank you” notes;
• Pass a resolution of appreciation and present it to them;
• Write to your local newspaper congratulating and thanking them;
• Hold a membership event to thank and honor them; or
• Give them a plaque or other award.
