Support true charities, job security

While PEF urges its members to generously support the 2002 State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA), the union’s Job Security Committee asks members to choose carefully in designating which agencies will receive their donations.

“The success of the SEFA campaign is a measure of the important tradition of member generosity,” said PEF Vice President Pat Baker, chair of the Job Security Committee. “It must also reflect the members’ ability to choose agencies that provide charity and community supports not available through public services.

“Preserving the security of members’ jobs in all agencies requires awareness and the ability to distinguish between genuine charities and parallel bureaucracies,” Baker said. “Unfortunately, some agencies have demonstrated a competitive policy of acquiring responsibility and public funding for services traditionally provided by our members and other public employees.”

The committee cited mounting evidence that any economic advantages from out-sourcing public services are frequently offset by reduced quality and accountability.

“However, the list of potential SEFA designees is proof that deserving and effective agencies abound,” Baker added. “Some of them provide particularly valued support to PEF members and their families, and others extend desperately needed aid abroad.

“Designating that your contributions go to such organizations reflects both enlightened self interest,” she said, “and informed, targeted support for true charities.” — Sherry Halbrook
