daughter wins national scholarship
A daughter of a Region 1 PEF member rose to the top of
her high school graduating class and earned a 2002
AFL-CIO Union Plus Scholarship.
Elaine Angelino was among 100 students selected
nationally from thousands of applicants.
The 18-year-old daughter of Roswell Park Cancer Institute
research chemist Norman Angelino will use the $3,000
award toward her studies in applied mathematics at
Harvard University beginning this fall.
Were very proud of her, her father
said. Shes a very well-rounded student, both
in the academic realm and the arts. Besides her interest
in mathematics, she studied the piano and violin for 10
years and recently won a national competition in a
composers contest. At Harvard, she plans to explore
a secondary interest in engineering, Angelino said.
One criterion in the scholarship competition was writing
an essay on unions. Angelino said his daughter has a
sincere appreciation of the work the union does, because
she is aware of what PEF has accomplished for state
workers. I think her essay put her over the
top, he said.
Were not only very proud of her, but grateful
for the unions role in furthering education for our
children, Angelino added.
The Union Plus national scholarship is available to
children of PEF members as well as members of other
AFL-CIO affiliates. For more information online, visit www.unionpriv.org. Deborah A. Miles
