Get active now in PEF Retirees

As the summer ends, PEF Retirees is gearing up for another busy year with lots of new members and leaders ready to participate.

Thanks to the energy and leadership of Ray Ferraro, who stepped down in late June as president of our statewide organization, we have a growing, active membership and are well known among other retiree and labor groups in New York and even on the national level.

I was elected president, and I look forward to working with you.

Many of you may already know me from my 30 years of service as a labor activist and leader — in Council 82 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the Civil Service Employees Association and PEF, where I was Region 2 coordinator and served 15 years on the Executive Board and Political Action Committee.

The other officers elected in June by the PEF Retirees Executive Board are: Cal Thayer, first vice president; Mary Reid, second vice president; and Eileen Spence, secretary.

A retired state transportation engineer, Cal is from Region 8 and a former vice president of PEF.

Mary is a former PEF Region 12 coordinator, political activist and PS&T contract chair. And Eileen, president of our Rochester chapter, was very active in the two successive organizing campaigns in the late 1970s that finally paid off with the founding of PEF.

You can also look forward to meeting PEF’s new director of retiree programs, Matt Shebar, who will work with our PEF Retiree chapters to educate members about the many benefits and services available to them through PEF Membership Benefits.

Please check with your PEF regional office or the PEF Retirees office at PEF headquarters (1-800-342-4306, ext. 289) for information about chapter meetings and activities in your area.
