PEF honors students with
Scacalossi scholarships

One PEF member from Schenectady and two children
of PEF members from Staten Island and East
Brunswick came up winners in the annual Robert
Porter Scholarship competition sponsored by the
American Federation of Teachers (AFT). . |

Ralph
Jones, an
advocate for the disabled specialist 1 in Albany,
is furthering his educational goals by attending
a computer science program at Schenectady
Community College. He received a $1,000
scholarship.
Jones goal is to make communications and
services more accessible to the public and design
Web sites that are compliant with the American
Disabilities Act. |

Jessica
Dweck, 17, was
valedictorian East Brunswick High School in New
Jersey and vice-president of the French Honor
Society. Earning top scores in a statewide
competition for biology and chemistry, Dweck will
be using her Robert G. Porter scholarship at John
Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where
she plans to study biophysics before entering
medical school. She is the daughter of PEF member
Albert Dweck, an assistant director of pharmacy
at South Beach Psychiatric Center on Staten
Island. |

Dweck and another Porter scholarship winner, Suzanne Nizza, will each receive $2,000
per year for four years. Nizza will also attend
John Hopkins where she will be studying
biomedical engineering. This 17 year-old was
valedictorian at Staten Island Academy and scored
a perfect 1600 on her SAT. She is also the
recipient of nine medals for excellence in
subjects ranging from Mathematics to Music. PEF
member Joseph Nizza, a workers compensation
claims referee at the Workers Compensation Board,
is her father.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
also awarded scholarships to children of PEF
members. |

Judy
Mark has been
awarded a $1,500 SEIU scholarship. A graduate of
Bethlehem Central High School, this 19 year-old
is entering her sophomore year at Brandeis
University in Massachusetts where she is on the
Deans List and is studying art history. She
won a Spanish Language Student Award and
participates in social action groups who visit
senior citizens and hospital patients. Mark is
active in campus art groups and frequents art
museums throughout the northeast. She is the
daughter of PEF member Robert Mark, a senior
attorney at the state Office of Real Property
Services.

Sharon
Chin, 18, will
receive a $1,000 Union Plus scholarship toward
her studies at Columbia University. She is
planning courses to reach her goal to work for
the United Nations. Earning top grades, Chin
distinguished herself academically making the
National Honor Roll each year. She has been
awarded the Summa Cum Laude Gold Medal for the
National Latin Exam twice and was selected as a
Student Ambassador to Germany in the Bridge
Berlin-New York Program. She is the daughter of
PEF member Christine Chu, an audit supervisor at
the state Audit Bureau, Office of the State
Comptroller. |
