PEF endorses Shafer for county legislator

A former PEF president has thrown his hat into the political ring and won the union’s endorsement. Howard Shafer, president of PEF from 1991 to 1994, is running for Albany County legislator representing Selkirk residents.

Shafer, who recently retired from his job as a principal health care fiscal analyst for the state Department of Health, was also active in the union as a steward and Executive Board member.

During his tenure as PEF president, Shafer unionized employees at the Albany County Probation Department and Albany Housing Authority.

“He’s pro-union and appreciates the work of the union,” said PEF Executive Board Member Tom Comanzo, Chair of the Region 8 Political Action Committee.

Comanzo said the endorsement was also based on Shafer’s involvement in the community. He is a member of the Selkirk school board and supports the local fire department.

“He wants to bring more business to the area and is dedicated to maintaining the services in the county,” Comanzo added.

Shafer will be among 38 other candidates seeking to become an Albany County legislator. Election Day is Tuesday, November 4. — Deborah A. Miles
