Two from PEF win AFT Porter Scholarships

Balvinder Singh and Alvin Cadwell are two happy PEF members after receiving American Federation of Teachers’ annual Robert G. Porter Scholarships for 2001.

Singh is a tax auditor trainee 2 and member of PEF Division 341 at the NYS Department of Tax and Finance in Chicago.

His son, Samarjit, entered the American Federation of Teachers national college scholarship competition and walked away with $8,000.

Singh was one of five students selected to receive the $8,000 merit-based scholarships this year. Singh is a freshman at the University of Illinois at Champagne/Urbana, where he is majoring in bio-engineering.

“I’m proud of him,” says Balvinder Singh of his son. “He’s done an excellent job.”

PEF Region 8 member Alvin Cadwell won a $1,000 Porter scholarship to help pay for his pursuit of a degree in civil engineering at the SUNY Institute for Technology at Utica/Rome.

Cadwell is a civil engineer for the state Transportation Department at its main office in Albany, where he is a member of PEF Division 177.

“I was really surprised to get it this year,” Cadwell says. “I tried last year, too, but wasn’t selected. Between this scholarship and the PEF educational voucher program, I may only have to pay for two or three courses.” — Sherry Halbrook
