Union
marshals forces behind candidates in tough contests
If you want to have a hand in shaping public policy, lend
a hand to politicians on the campaign trail.
PEF has picked its priority races for this years
state legislative elections. These are contests where the
candidate PEF has endorsed is likely to face a
substantial challenge and would really appreciate the
unions help.
We have endorsed candidates in hundreds of races
for state offices and Congress, said PEF Vice
President Ken Brynien, chair of the unions
Political Action Committee. Since we cant go
all out in every race, we will focus our greatest efforts
on those where we can make the biggest difference.
These candidates support PEF on important issues.
State Sen. Tom Morahan, for example, introduced
legislation this year to curtail mandatory overtime for
state nurses, Brynien said.
I urge our members to call their regional
coordinator or PAC chair to volunteer for these efforts.
We should all pitch in to help in these campaigns,
Brynien added. Sherry Halbrook
PEF adds six to
endorsements
State comptroller candidate Alan Hevesi heads a list of
six more political candidates who have received the
unions endorsement since the PEF Executive Board
acted on the majority of endorsements in August.
Following the primary elections on September 10,
PEFs Statewide Political Action Committee met in
Albany to review the outcomes of several contests between
candidates vying to run on their parties lines on
the November 5th ballot.
Hevesi won a primary race for the Democratic line in the
November election for state comptroller.
We have an excellent history of working with Alan,
who is the former New York City comptroller, said
PEF Vice President Ken Brynien, chair of the Statewide
PAC.
The other post-primary endorsements include four
Democrats and a Republican running for seats in the state
Legislature. They are:
Matthew Spano, D, 60th AD;
Daniel ODonnell, D, 69th AD;
Chris Ortloff, R, 114th AD;
Crystal Peoples, D, 141st AD; and
Kevin Parker, D, 21st SD.
