Retirees on the
move nationally
More than 800 retired union members gathered in
Washington in early September for the Founding National
Meeting of the AFL-CIO’s new Alliance for Retired
Americans (ARA), which represents 2.7 million retirees.
I attended it as a member of the NYS ARA’s Interim
Executive Board. The ARA National Committee will soon be
in touch with members of PEF Retirees to inform you of
its goals and activities.
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton addressed us twice. We also
heard from House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt and six
other members of Congress. They talked about the need for
a universal prescription-drug plan under Medicare and the
importance of maintaining the financial viability of
Social Security.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives voted for
a bill to provide tax breaks for the purchase of Long
Term Care Insurance and other kinds of health coverage.
In Albany this year, the law providing the Enhanced STAR
program (school tax relief) was amended so that seniors
with annual income of less than $60,000 will not lose
this qualification if their income increases due to
pension or Social Security adjustments meant to offset
inflation.
And this legislation eliminates the need to re-register
every year for Enhanced STAR. Participants will simply
return a postcard listing any changes in their status.
