EXCEEDING THEIR GOALS — PEF members Chris D. Bull and Penny Jock headed a team that increased SEFA contributions at Bare Hill Correctional Facility by nearly $10,000.

Region 7 members earn awards for SEFA fundraising

Surpassing their collection goals to assist the state Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA) campaign, PEF Region 7 members Chris D. Bull and Penny Jock remain surprised, delighted and humbled with all the accolades coming their way.

As co-chairs of the 2001-02 SEFA campaign at Bare Hill Correctional Facility in Malone, the members received a United Way of New York State award, and a statewide leadership award from SEFA.

Bull, a senior correction counselor, and Jock, a head account clerk, said they were honored to receive the awards, but they credited their co-workers for making the campaign a success.

“I’m proud of the people I work with,” Bull said. “It’s a good feeling to see your co-workers pitching-in together.”

More than half of the 563 Bare Hill employees contributed and raised $23,149 — approximately $10,000 more than in the preceding campaign.

“The Bare Hill employees are the ones who reached into their pockets and made this work,” Jock added. “The campaign was launched just before September 11 last year, and I was concerned that event would have an affect on the SEFA campaign, but it didn’t.”

“Our success was due to a personal approach. That made the difference,” Jock said.

Bull and Jock supervised a team of nine. They made personal visits in pairs to talk with individuals and departments and, according to Jock, that encouraged people to reach into their pockets.

“We had fun doing it this way,” Jock said. “It gave us an opportunity to chat with people we don’t see on a regular basis, and we were right there to answer any questions.”

“It was a way for us to give back to the community,” Bull said. “The experience was deeply rewarding. It just snowballed. We had no idea we would do so well.” — Deborah A. Miles
