Per diem rates changing for ’07
By SHERRY HALBROOK
If you travel for the state, you will be glad to hear the daily (per diem)
reimbursement rates for meals, lodging and incidental expenses are going up for
most areas of New York state.
These rates, set by the federal General Services Administration for each county
in the U.S., are also used by the state of New York to reimburse its employees
and they are the rates allowable by the Internal Revenue Service for determining
business expense deductions on your federal income tax.
This year, the GSA adjusted the rates for every locality in New York state. Most
rates went up, but a few went down.
If the 2006-07 rate is higher than the 2005-06 rate, the new rate takes effect
October 1, 2006. However, if the new rate is lower, it is effective November 1,
2006. Generally, the new rates will apply until September 30, 2007.
The maximum combined (lodging, meals and incidentals) per diem for Albany County
is going from $143 to $152. The rate for Buffalo (Erie County) will be $135,
that’s up from $124. Rochester is going from $125 to $131, and Syracuse from
$122 to $126.
In certain localities, such as New York city and Lake Placid, where local
lodging and meal costs vary significantly by season, the GSA assigns different
rates for those seasons.
The rates for Manhattan are changing for all four seasons.
And this year, the GSA broke Queens out into a separate category from the other
four boroughs of New York.
You can find a complete national list of all of the GSA rates online at
www.gsa.gov/perdiem. Remember, some of
these rates change seasonally. The site also includes lists of hotels and other
lodging that honors the rates.
