By KENNETH BRYNIEN
Five years ago on September 11, terrorists attacked the World Trade Center killing nearly 3,000 people, 34 of whom were PEF members — members for whom we still mourn. PEF paid tribute to those members in a quiet and solemn ceremony marking the five-year anniversary of the attack.

The terrible events of September 11 brought out the best in our members in their courage and their service to the people of New York.

Our members responded to the attack with selflessness, courage and valor. On that day, many of our members continued working in whatever capacity they could, helping to evacuate the towers, working in rescue operations, and ensuring the vital services our members provide to the citizens of New York were not interrupted.

In the face of the terrorist attacks, we united as a union to help the victims of the tragedy, and aid their families in their time of need. We worked to overcome the fiscal fallout from the attacks and maintain the vital services our members provide through the ensuing fiscal crisis, uniting with other unions to prevent devastating budget cuts, making PEF stronger.

We can never forget the sacrifice of our colleagues who perished that day or the sacrifice of any of our members who have lost their lives serving the citizens of New York.

We must continue building on the unity forged in the fires of Sept. 11, working together to improve the lives of our members, whether through our political action, contract fightback or mobilization efforts. This is the best tribute we can make to our colleagues in recognition of the sacrifice they made.
