MAKING THE ROUNDS — U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand
meets convention delegates.
Delegates make
health, safety high priorities
Only one of the 26 resolutions that came before
PEF’s 31st Annual Convention, held last month in Niagara Falls, was adopted
in its original form.
One other was amended and then adopted.
Five resolutions were defeated, a sixth was ruled out-of-order, and a
seventh was “postponed indefinitely.”
The convention adjourned before the delegates had time to finish voting on
yet another resolution, or even take up the 16 remaining.
Resolution 6, which was adopted unscathed, calls for PEF to seek more
equitable and safe working conditions for pregnant parole officers, and
especially more limited-duty work assignments.
Resolution 5 was adopted after it was amended. It calls for PEF to seek a
total of eight hours of paid leave annually for cancer screening for every
state PS&T employee. The law currently provides four hours of paid leave for
employees to receive breast cancer screening and another four hours for
prostate cancer screening.
Delegates ran out of time in the midst of dealing with Resolution 17, which
calls for the creation of two more PEF Executive Board seats to represent
PEF Retirees. Such a change would require amending the PEF Constitution.
