A message from PEF Retirees President Steve
Muscarella
Leading
the fight to preserve Social Security
Paul Krugman, a
Noble-Prize-winning economist and columnist for The NY Times is trying to
debunk what he calls the “invented crisis” that opponents of Social Security
have formulated to attack one of the most successfully run government social
programs.
Krugman finds no clear and present financial danger to this program that he
says has brought “dignity and decency” to the lives of older Americans.
Judicious leadership, he says, can make the small changes necessary to
ensure its continued viability.
We, at PEF Retirees, agree wholeheartedly with Krugman, and we now have
several new leaders in our organization to help us fight to preserve our
benefits.
Bill Crotty, Mike DelPiano, and Mark Grasmeyer have been elected to join our
PEF Retirees Executive Board. We welcome their experience and talent.
Bill has been elected president in PEF Retiree Chapter 7, the North Country.
His territory will include Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence
counties. This wide expanse, with PEF retirees spread throughout, will be a
challenge.
Bill’s 24 years of PEF Executive Board experience and decades as the Region
7 coordinator will serve him well. His primary interest is health care
protection and he will be a great asset to our board, considering the
continuous threat of assaults we endure on our promised health insurance.
Mike was elected president of the PEF Retirees Utica/Rome chapter this July.
He brings 40 years of union experience to the PEF Retirees and is a valuable
addition.
“Someone is always trying to take away our rights or benefits,” Mike said.
“That’s why we volunteered our time and energy to our union and now strive
to protect seniors.”
Our retirees in Hamilton, Herkimer, Fulton, Madison, Montgomery, Lewis and
Oneida counties should work with Mike to preserve senior benefits.
Mark is the new president of the Syracuse chapter. Mark became active in PEF
when he saw how management was trampling the rights of PEF members at what
is now the state Office of Children and Family Services.
The PEF Retirees encourages our members in Cayuga, Cortland, Jefferson,
Onondaga, Oswego and Seneca counties to join with Mark in fighting these
abuses.
Our leaders are in place. Now, it’s up to you to get behind them and do your
part.
