Division 240
awards gift membership
Alice Hughes, Ed Orwat, Cal Thayer and I staffed the PEF
Retirees booth at the PEF Convention at the Buffalo
Convention Center, where we gave out information and
answered delegates questions.
At this event, PEF Division 240 Council Leader Jack Lim
presented PEF Retirees with a check for membership dues
for 10 Division 240 members who recently retired from the
state Insurance Fund.
Recognizing that the number of state retirees is growing
rapidly and represents a potential but untapped source of
political clout, Division 240 created the
Cabell-Ginsberg-Shapiro Division 240 Retirement
Committee. This committee is named in honor of three
former Division 240 stewards and founding members of PEF.
The goal is to reach out to award a number of gift
memberships to their retirees to encourage their
participation in the retiree organization and in PEF.
We ask all division leaders to inform the PEF Retirees
office of members who are retiring, so we can send them
membership kits. Otherwise, it takes us one year to
obtain this information.
With the signing by Gov. George Pataki of S3365A and
A4190A the minimum age has been reduced from 70 to 65 at
which retirees can re-enter public employment without any
earnings limit and without losing any retirement
benefits. Someday, hopefully, it may be reduced to age
55.
Dont miss your PEF Retirees noon chapter meetings
at your local PEF office: Albany November 4; New
York City November 20; and Long Island
November 27.
