Bid for state Assembly in 98th District
PEF endorses Aileen Gunther

By SHERRY HALBROOK
PEF is endorsing Aileen Gunther for the state Assembly in the 98th District, which includes all of Sullivan and part of Orange counties.

Gunther is the Democratic candidate running in a special election on November 4 to fill the seat left vacant by the death of her husband Assemblyman Jacob “Jake” E. Gunther III.

“We are proud to endorse Aileen Gunther for the state Assembly,” said PEF Region 9 Coordinator Neila Cardus. “Aileen will bring a lifetime of caring and commitment to this post. She has vowed to stand up for the issues important to working families, including quality, affordable health care, top-notch education and first-rate jobs for our families.”

“We are confident Aileen will maintain the same high standard of service and support for working families as her husband. Jake was a friend to labor unions and a dear friend to PEF,” Cardus said. “Jake stood by PEF’s side on many issues and was instrumental in the fight to keep the doors to Middletown Psychiatric Center open in the face of Gov. George Pataki’s attempts to close this facility.”

“I thank PEF for endorsing my candidacy for the state Assembly,” Gunther said. “The highly-skilled members of PEF provide tremendously important services to our community and state. I’ll make sure this good work gets recognized in Albany.

“Just as my husband, Jake, fought to keep open the Middletown Psychiatric Center, I will do the same,” Gunther said. “As your assemblywoman, I will represent the views of the working men and women of the 98th Assembly District. I’m a proud believer in our working families, and know that together we can make a real difference.”

Gunther is a registered nurse, working at the Catskill Regional Medical Center. She has 29 years of experience in health care, including professional service in surgery, obstetrics, mental health, and emergency medicine.
