Fact sheets, booklets now available
New publications focus on workplace health and safety

By DEBORAH A. MILES
PEF’s Health and Safety Department has produced several publications to assist employees in identifying and controlling workplace hazards. Among the most popular are three fact sheets. One describes how to establish a health and safety program, another addresses indoor environmental problems and there’s one that offers tips on avoiding hazards in the office.

For example, the accident and injury prevention fact sheet says falls are the most common office accident. The new fact sheet describes the conditions that lead to most falls, and ways to prevent them. It also addresses strains and back injuries, and covers a dozen topics including emergency preparedness.

“These materials and others were produced to help us reach our goal to achieve safe and healthy environments in all PEF- represented worksites,” said Jonathan Rosen, PEF’s director of health and safety. “This goal is attainable with effort and involvement. An active health and safety committee is the cornerstone of an effective prevention program.”

Lifting with ease

For members who work in a health care setting, a new booklet called Patient Handling Solutions describes cutting-edge products designed to reduce back strain caused by lifting patients.

“This directory is designed to provide your facility’s ergonomics or health and safety committee with the most up-to-date information about patient-handling equipment options,” said Ross Aronson, PEF’s Health and Safety Committee chair. “It can also put you in contact with state vendors who can demonstrate the equipment.

“Good equipment is simply one component of a good ergonomics program.”

Essential computer posture

Ergonomics is the buzzword in office settings these days. The daily use of computers has resulted in health problems for workers. Many suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. Others experience symptoms ranging from headaches and vision problems to cramps in the legs and feet.

The participant’s guide for video display terminals and office ergonomics gives complete guidelines for selecting and adjusting a computer workstation and ways to eliminate body stress from computer use.

“There is enormous interest in office ergonomics,” said Aronson. “We can provide workshops on this topic, as well as on worker’s compensation — another topic our members deem important.”

Partial funding for these materials came from a state Department of Labor grant and through PEF Membership Benefits. The new materials will be available on the PEF Web site, www.pef.org, in November.
