PEF members have been asking for more help preparing for state civil service
exams, and they are getting it.
“We’re very happy to announce the PEF Membership Benefits Program (MBP) now is
offering three new “learning” guides to PEF members without charge,” said MBP
Administrator Graham Goffin. “We hope these guides, developed for MBP by
Syracuse University, will help PEF members advance as professionals serving New
York state.”
The guides are titled: Arithmetic Reasoning; Tabular Reasoning; and Interviewing
and Investigating Techniques.
For several years, MBP has provided free study guides for the Promotion Test
Battery. But the state has suspended the PTB.
“We departed from the path of designing guides for exams, in favor of learning
guides for subjects covered on many exams,” said PEF Director of Human Resources
and Education Clifford Merchant, who helped MBP and the university tailor the
new guides to meet members’ changing needs. “The focus has shifted to topics,
rather than questions on a specific exam, with the goal of helping you refresh
information you may have previously learned.”
You can download the guides from the MBP Web site,
http://www.pefmembershipbenefits.org/pro/index.html. The guides are listed
under Professional Development. Printed copies of the guides are available at
PEF regional offices, or by calling 800 342-4306, ext. 243.
MBP also reimburses fees paid by PEF members who take state open-competitive
exams. The reimbursement application form is available on the MBP Web site under
Professional Development. Be sure to apply within 60 days of receiving your test
score from Civil Service.
