Denyce Duncan Lacy Dozens of members of the PEF Black Caucus learned how to handle media interviews and how to recognize signs of drug or alcohol abuse during the organization's 18th Annual Caucus Convention in late September. Held in Huntington, Long Island and organized by Caucus member Lillian Dabney, the convention featured a workshop on substance abuse by a drug educator from Islip and a communications workshop prepared by the PEF Public Relations Department. Caucus members also used the convention to review their bylaws and to network with each other and with union leaders in attendance. "Our members across the state continue to diligently provide quality services to the public even though we are facing adverse conditions because of the (PS&T) contract stalemate and constant threat of agency cutbacks," said Caucus President Grace Lott. "This convention gives them a chance to learn some new information and gain new skills in a very comfortable environment," she added. Caucus members also honored PEF Region 9 Coordinator Neila Cardus with their Humanitarian Award for 1999, and gave Executive Board member Carlos Garcia their "Advocate of the Year" award. |
