A message from PEF Retirees President Ray Ferraro
Binghamton rally kicks off COLA 2000 campaign
The COLA/2000 campaign kicked off October 27 at Broome Community College in Binghamton with more than 300 retirees and PEF members in attendance. State Comptroller H. Carl McCall was keynote speaker for the event which I was pleased to chair. Assembly Member Jay Dinga also spoke.

The event was supported by retirees from NYS United Teachers, the National Education Association, Council 82, United Police & Fire, Retired Public Employees Association and NY State Retired Teachers Association.

College President Dr. Don Dellow was most accommodating. We were given the use of The Little Theatre in the Student Center. And parking was allowed without reservation as to location or designation. Dellow also graciously provided a small reception for McCall.

The comptroller, who oversees the state Retirement System, repeatedly said he could pay a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to our pensions on a permanent annual basis without cost to the employer contributions or to the taxpayers. What more do the legislators want to hear?

Call your legislators and find out what they have against the comptroller's plan. Ask them to support legislation being drafted by state Sen Vincent Leibell and Assembly Member Eric Vitaliano.

On behalf of PEF Retirees, I wish you all happy holidays and a great new millennium!
