financial aidIf you are looking for financial aid to help your student pay college costs, January is traditionally a crucial month for submitting applications for government and private loans and scholarships. To learn about student financial aid for New York state residents, call the Higher Education Services Corporation at 1-800-NY-HESC or go online to www.hesc.org. And check with the guidance office at your childs school for information about local scholarships. Watch for workshops on how to apply for financial aid, which are usually offered at various sites throughout the state in January. Union-based scholarships also are available to the children of PEF members. In addition to PEFs Joseph Scacalossi Scholarship program, many of the unions regions and divisions have scholarship programs. Check with your division leader or steward for information about these. PEFs two international affiliates the American Federation of Teachers, and the Service Employees International Union hold annual scholarship competitions which are open to the children of PEF members. You may also apply for the Union Plus credit card scholarship program. Sherry Halbrook Time to apply for PEF scholarship Every year, PEF awards 10 Joseph Scacalossi scholarships, each worth $4,000 over four years. You must be the child, step child or ward of any active, retired or deceased PEF member to apply. And you must be a high school senior or college freshman. To apply, complete and submit by March 15, 2002, the preliminary application below to: PEF Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 12414, Albany, NY 12212-2414. Upon approval of your preliminary application, the PEF Scholarship Committee will mail you a final application. Complete and return the final application to the committee by April 26, 2002, with a copy of your high school transcript and either SAT or ACT results.

Scholarships By DEBORAH A. MILES PEF Division 236 at the state Division of Parole has awarded eight $500 college scholarships to children of its members. The winners of the annual Neil Boyle Scholarships were selected by PEF Region 10 Coordinator Jennifer Faucher on October 26 in a random drawing. All applicants had to be pursuing post-secondary studies. The winners are: Kurt Barnes Jr., son of Patricia Baker-Barnes, Queensboro office; Kamaria Burns, daughter of Sylvester Burns, Hempstead office; Kim Rose Campbell, daughter of Lance Campbell, Watertown Correctional Facility; Tanika Day, daughter of Willis Toms, Bronx office; Tracy Johnson, daughter of Theresa Dean, New York City office; Ricardo Rivera, son of Ismael Rivera, Queens office; Jessica Urtnowski, daughter of Robert Urtnowski, Hempstead office; and Akio Watson, son of Charlie Watson, Bronx office. Two alternates were selected in case any of the winners were not eligible. The alternates are: Amy Lahart, daughter of Robert Lahart, Utica office; and Samantha Kramer, daughter of William Kramer, NYC office. The Neil Boyle Scholarship committee, consisting of PEF Executive Board Members Irene Bland, Gary Stern and Willis Toms, received more than 100 applications. Guidelines and applications are mailed to each member in Division 236 in August, prior to the annual PEF convention, where the drawing is usually held. The scholarship is named in memory of the late Neil Boyle, a founding member of PEF and former council leader of Division 236. Union Plus offers $4k scholarships PEF members and their families are eligible to apply for one-time cash grants of up to $4,000 for higher education available through the Union Plus Scholarship program. The program awarded 115 grants to students from 31 unions in 2001. Grants ranging from $500 to $4,000 are awarded on the basis of merit, character, leadership, appreciation of labor, and need. Applications and rules are now available for 2002 and may be requested by sending a postcard with your name, address, phone number and international union affiliation (AFT/SEIU 4053) to: The Union Plus Scholarship Program P.O.
