Test drive online training
If you have an interest in reviewing online training courses, the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER) is currently recruiting PEF members to be testers.

“The purpose of the testers is to review the courses and make sure they flow, and to point out any idiosyncrasies in the programs,” said PEF Director of Mobilization and Education Cliff Merchant.

Current online training courses include Hazard Communications, Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) for Supervisors, Making New York State a Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace, Sexual Harassment Prevention and Pre-retirement Planning.

After the testing and making any necessary modifications, the courses will be made available to state workers on GOER’s learning Website,
www.GOER.state.ny.us.

GOER is seeking people with and without training experience and from a variety of job settings including offices, outdoors, institutions and those whose work keeps them primarily on the road. The only requirement is the availability of a computer with Internet access.

Testers may use state time to participate, and the commitment is approximately two to four hours. GOER staff will contact applicants to see if they are available and to schedule their review of a course. If a tester is unavailable for a specific date, their name will be kept on file for future projects.

Contract offers DOCS members help with tuition
PEF members at the state Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) have a new chance to further their educations thanks to a professional development provision in the PS&T contract

DOCS was awarded an $83,000 Continuing Education Grant (CEG) by the PEF-NYS Joint Professional Development Committee.

“This is something PEF did in conjunction with DOCS to provide tuition reimbursement to our teachers and vocational instructors for courses in education and administration,” said PEF Region 4 Coordinator David Stallone, who is also PEF’s labor-management chair at DOCS.

“This grant offers a great opportunity for our members to take courses for promotional advances and supervisory positions,” he said.

In addition to helping members qualify for promotions, the tuition reimbursement is also a recruitment and retention tool. Stallone said he expects members to apply for reimbursement under the grant. The reimbursements will be distributed based on seniority and other qualifications.

“The beauty of this program is the recipients can choose the colleges they want to attend. Our members who are teachers will be able to select colleges that both fulfill their professional needs and are convenient to them,” he said.
Although the current PS&T contract expires April 1, 2003, and this is a one-time grant opportunity, Stallone said he hopes the Professional Development Committee will be able to offer this again in the future, so members can complete their educational goals. — Deborah A. Miles
