PEF ready for
challenges 2003 will bring
By ROGER E. BENSON
Next year will bring many challenges for PEF, challenges
in the areas of job security, stronger contracts, and in
pension reform. As we close out 2002, I am confident that
we have positioned PEF to effectively as possible meet
and succeed in the challenges we will face.
We have taken what we learned and experienced over the
last several years and continue to build our political
and legislative influence, our ability to mount an
effective media campaign, and our ability to mobilize our
membership in activities supporting our contract and job
security struggles.
We have begun implementing a new $1 million job security
campaign, we have nearly 120 fully mobilized divisions,
and we were active in dozens of elections with a success
rate of close to 98 percent.
We continue to mobilize and organize our membership to
effectively respond when needed. Our political action
efforts, campaign endorsements and activities have given
us more clout in the Legislature, and political capital
that we can use for the inevitable job-security and
contract struggles we will face in 2003.
However, our success in job security and contract
negotiations will be dependent upon your efforts, as well
as our ability to strategically mobilize to take
advantage of the circumstances and conditions facing us.
We are ready.
Never before has PEF been as well prepared to tackle the
challenges that will face us next year. Through your
efforts, action and involvement, we can and will continue
to build on our foundation of political action and
mobilization and lay the ground work for success next
year and for many years to come.
