Another round of
legislative battles ahead
The November 2002 elections are over and the assessment
can be made that PEFs endorsement for the major
offices in state government were correct and very
successful.
We now must prepare for the 2003 legislative session. We
need to work on making sure several legislative issues
important to retirees are reintroduced in that session.
One of our top priorities should be the
Military/Vets Buy Back for Retirees bill. It
is S.2329A and A.9839 and was passed by the Assembly but
remains in committee in the Senate. New bill numbers will
be assigned to this and all other legislation that is
reintroduced in 2003.
Another high priority is the bill on Retirees
Returning to State Employment which would allow
them to earn additional pension credit. It was A.10386
and S.6447, but was not reported out of the legislative
committees this year.
Of course, the Pension COLA Enhancement
legislation remains a top priority for us. Numbered
S.6775 and A.9889 this year, it would enhance eligibility
and benefits in the present cost-of-living adjustment to
pensions.
When you contact your legislators about these bills, also
ask them to support restoring full funding to the state
Office for the Aging so it can continue to provide
services important to us.
Congress will consider several items pertaining to Social
Security and Medicare.
