January time to apply for student financial aid

During January, PEF members with college-bound children may want to investigate a number of scholarships to help ease the financial crunch of college costs. January is the month most colleges and universities recommend you begin submitting applications for loans and scholarships.

To learn about financial aid for New York state residents, call Higher Education Services Corporation at 1-800-NY-HESC or go online to
www.hesc.org.

New on this website is the World Trade Center Memorial Scholarship Program, created to provide college scholarships to family members and dependents of those killed or seriously disabled in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and to survivors who were seriously disabled.

These scholarships will cover the full cost of attending a public college within New York up to a maximum of $12,000 per year.

For local scholarships and loans, check with the guidance office at your child’s school, or enroll in workshops on how to apply for financial aid, which are usually offered at high schools and colleges throughout the state in January.

In addition, preapplications are now available for PEF’s Joseph Scacalossi Scholarship program. And check with your PEF division leaders to find out about other scholarships, such as the Neil Boyle Scholarship offered to children of PEF Division 236 members.

PEF’s international affiliates also offer scholarships. The American Federation of Teachers offers the Robert G. Porter Scholars Program. Get details on their website at
www.aft.org.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) offers scholarship competitions open to the children of PEF members. Visit their website at
www.seiu.org to learn about the SEIU Scholarship Program, the Jesse Jackson Scholarship and the Moe Foner Scholarship.

Legacy of Neil Boyle lives on through scholarships
Several PEF regions and divisions offer scholarships to their members’ children and wards. For example, PEF Division 236 at the state Division of Parole has been honoring the memory of Neil Boyle for a decade, by awarding $500 college scholarships to eight children of its members.

“Neil Boyle was a founding member of the union,” said PEF Executive Board Member Gary Stern. “This award is important for two reasons — it acknowledges the principles for which Neil Boyle stood and it teaches our children that parole officers recognize the importance of education.”

Stern, chair of this scholarship committee which also includes Marilyn Brewington, Chandra Perry-Patterson and Thomas Silagi, said the committee received 90 validated entries this year. Guidelines and applications were mailed to each member in Division 236 in August. PEF President Roger Benson picked the names of the winners in a random drawing in October at the PEF convention in Buffalo.

Three children from the family of Lance Campbell, a parole officer in Watertown, were selected separately in the drawing. They are daughter Kim Campbell, and stepsons Jay and Jon Michael Passerino.

The other winners are: Jovonda Gates, daughter of parole officer Joseph Gates of Corona; Elisha Littles, daughter of parole revocation specialist Gerald McCord of Garnerville, the NYC deputy director; Michael McGuire, son of parole officer Philip McGuire of Norwich; Melanie Mooney, daughter of parole officer Richard Mooney of Floral Park; and Jordon Whittington, son of parole officer Homer Whittington of the Bronx.

Two alternate winners were selected in the event any of the winners are found ineligible. The alternates are Robert Huntzinger, son of parole officer John Huntzinger of Batavia; and Alexis Irvin, daughter of senior computer analyst Cherylann Irvin of Richmondville.

Tap into a Union Plus scholarship
PEF members and their families may apply for one-time cash grants of up to $4,000 through the Union Plus Scholarship Program.

The program, now celebrating its 11th year, is an example of the US labor movement’s commitment to higher education.

This year, 101 students representing 32 AFL-CIO unions have been selected to receive $150,000 in scholarships. The awards are presented annually to union members, their spouses or children who want to begin or continue their post secondary educations.

Grants starting at $500 are awarded on the basis of merit, character, leadership, appreciation of labor, and need. Application forms for 2003 are now available at www.unionpriv.org. Or send a postcard with your name, address, phone number and international union affiliation (AFT/SEIU 4053) to:
Union Plus Scholarship Program
P.O. Box 34800
Washington, DC 20043-4800.

Applications and required documents must be returned by January 31. Winners will be announced May 31.
