Jean DeBow scholarship forms
available in spring
Women in PEF have the opportunity
to apply for the Jean DeBow Scholarship, named in honor
of the memory of this late PEF vice president.
This scholarship is open to PEF women in a leadership
role, such as a steward or council leader, who are also
pursuing a post secondary education in an accredited
school or program.
One scholarship award of $2,000 is given annually at the
PEF convention. Once an applicant wins and accepts the
award, she is no longer eligible to apply for the
scholarship again.
Applications are available in late spring and must be
returned to the PEF Scholarship Committee no later than
August 1 of each year.
Along with the completed form, each applicant must submit
a 150-word essay or less on how she will utilize this
award with her labor studies. The applicant must also
include an essay from an elected PEF leader about her
qualifications for this award.
To obtain an application, write to the PEF Scholarship
Committee, PEF Headquarters, 1168-70 Troy-Schenectady
Road, P.O. Box 12414, Albany, New York 12212-2414.
Parole
officers honor founding member, give college aid
PEF Division 236 at
the state Division of Parole has been honoring the memory
of Neil Boyle for more than a decade, by awarding
$500 college scholarships to eight children of its
members.
Neil Boyle was a parole officer and a founder of Division
236. The scholarship is not only a tribute to him, but
was established to teach children that parole officers
recognize the importance of education.
This year, 92 applications were received and reviewed by
the scholarship committee comprised of: Darryl Stevenson,
chairman; Frances Meyer; Susan Jeffords; Marilyn
Brewington; and Richard Mata.
PEF President Roger Benson selected the winners in a
random drawing at the unions 25th Annual Convention
in September.
The winners, all children of parole officers, are:
Christopher Georgia, son of Robert Georgia, Albany
office; Cara Grome, daughter of William Grome, Syracuse
office; Kavitha Matthews, daughter of Edappara Matthews,
Greenhaven Correctional Facility; Amy Monfiletto,
daughter of Joseph Monfiletto, Watertown Correctional
Facility; Melody Ortega, daughter of Nydia Garcia, Bronx
office; Erin Roche, daughter of John Roche, Northeastern
office; Tiffany Roman-Rivera, daughter of Rafael Rivera,
Syracuse office; and Daniel Schiller, son of Rich Frassa,
Nassau office.
Three alternative winners were selected in the event any
of the winners are found ineligible. The alternates are
Alicia Kissane, daughter of Joel Kissane, Franklin
Correctional Facility; Kimberly McDouth, daughter of
Brenda Cromer, Brooklyn office; and Daniel Payne, son of
William Payne, Central office. Deborah A. Miles
