January is financial aid awareness month

By DEBORAH A. MILES
If you are the parent or guardian of a college-bound student, January is the time to investigate the many scholarships and loans available to children of union members.

Top students can qualify for as much as $1,000 to $5,000 per year to lighten the load of hefty tuition bills.

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation provides free information about financial aid for New York residents. You may call 1-800-NY-HESC or visit their Web site at
www.hesc.org for information about scholarships, grants and loans.

The Web site also has tips on where to apply for financial aid, including how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

For local scholarships and loans, the guidance counselor at your child’s school may also have additional information. Traditionally, high schools and colleges offer financial aid workshops throughout the state during January.

PEF Scacalossi Scholarship
PEF annually awards 10 scholarships worth $4,000 over four years in memory of
Joseph Scacalossi, who helped organize and lead the union in its early years.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be either a high school senior or college freshman, and the child or ward of an active, retired or deceased PEF member.

Awards are based on academic achievements, volunteerism and extra-curricular activities.
