100 PEF members enjoyed an evening of music, dining and dancing October 24
at the Black and White Ball to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Black
Caucus of PEF. The event was held at Antun’s, Queens Village.The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the caucus’ annual Vivian Birdsong Monsanto Scholarship.
This year’s recipients of the $500 award were Moriah Roberts from Albany, daughter of Maddie Shannon-Roberts, and Rumeal Wilhite from Buffalo, son of Raymond Wilhite. Both parents are disability analysts.
“This event is a lot more than members getting together for a dance. It is tailored to inspire our young people to further their educations,” said PEF Black Caucus President Elizabeth Cheese. “Education is the key to open the door for a better future and satisfying career, and as a way of giving back to the community.
“These scholarships represent a celebration of life,” Cheese said. “They are a symbol of hope for the recipients and also remind us of Vivian, who was a vibrant and positive person.”
The scholarship program began in 1988 and was named after Monsanto, a Black Caucus chapter president. The caucus has awarded nearly 80 scholarships in her memory.
