PEF nurses: Don’t let buses leave for Albany without you
Have you reserved your seat on the bus for Nurses’ Lobby Day?
“It’s very important for our PEF nurses to turn out for this event on Tuesday, May 4,” said Debbie Egel, a co-chair of the PEF Nurses Committee.
“This year we are lobbying with nurses from two of our sister unions — 1199 SEIU (Service Employees International Union) and NYSUT (NY State United Teachers) so we should have a very visible presence at the Capitol.”
By joining forces, the nurses hope to impress state lawmakers that they are united on key issues.
Several state legislators, including Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and Assembly Members Susan John, Richard Gottfried and Kevin Cahill, are expected to speak at the rally which starts at 11:30 a.m., and all state lawmakers are invited to greet the nurses.
After lunch, the nurses will split into groups to button-hole their legislators.
“Our most important messages are the need to require safe staffing and end mandatory overtime,” said June Edwards, who also co-chairs the PEF Nurses Committee.
The nurses will urge the lawmakers to support the following bills:
• S.680/A.6251 — prohibits mandatory overtime;
• S.3190/A.2700 — safe staffing;
• S.2304/A.5490 — nursing home safe staffing; and
• S.2637/A.7466 — repeals the exempt clause which allows unlicensed staff to perform RN-level duties.
PEF is providing bus transportation and boxed lunches and dinners for its nurses at the Empire State Convention Center. The buses will depart at 4 p.m.
“If you haven’t made your reservations yet, please call your regional PEF office now to reserve your place,” Edwards said. “The unity and determination we show at this event may finally give these bills the boost they need to become law.”
“This time, we have a better chance to make the legislators hear us and finally put an end to mandatory overtime,” Egel added.
