PEF Rretirees go high tech
PEF Retirees members on Long Island (Region 12) have been meeting with members in Albany (Region 8) without long commutes via car, train or plane.
Instead, they have been meeting over a telephonic bridge which connects the Albert Shanker Conference Center at the New York State United Teachers in Albany with the PEF Region 12 offices on Long Island.
We are lucky NYSUT, our sister union in the American Federation of Teachers, gives us access to all the advanced technology of the Shanker Conference Center at its new headquarters in Latham, and PEF has speaker-phone technology at its Region 12 office. As a result, we can hold one meeting in two locations. So far, it’s been very productive.
The telephonic bridge is just the beginning of the technology PEF Retirees are using. This month, we are unveiling our new PEF Retirees’ page on the PEF Web site.
To check it out, go to www.PEF.org and click on “Retirement
Awareness.”
There you will find information about free dues for eligible retirees; programs for retiree leaders and activists on legislation, political action and other retirement issues. You will also find information PEF members should have before they
retire.
But the best way to stay involved is to attend the PEF Retirees chapter meetings in your area.
The Albany and Long Island Chapters will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, at NYSUT Headquarters in Latham and the PEF Office in Hauppauge.
The Syracuse Chapter meets 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, at Plainville Turkey Farms Restaurant, 5633 West Genesee St., Camillus.
And the Buffalo Chapter will hold a breakfast meeting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 3, at Potts’ Banquet Hall, 694 S. Ogden St., Buffalo.
