Region 1 member running through door to retirement

There’s no danger PEF Division 167 member Chuck Tokarz will turn into a couch potato after he retires from state service this month. He’s retiring to pursue his passion of road racing.

Tokarz finished an astounding 69 races in 2003 and, according to the Greater Buffalo Track Club, is the most prolific racer in the greater Buffalo area — running more races than any other man or woman.

“I began running in the early ’90s as I was approaching my 40th birthday,” Tokarz said “I decided it was time to practice what I preached, since I’m a recreational therapist at Western New York Developmental Disabilities Services Office.”

Running has not only been a hobby for him. It became a lifestyle change as Tokarz began his journey of fitness and preparation for a healthy retirement.

“Not only have I made many friends and contacts through racing, I have also become more disciplined, and have used running as a great stress reliever,” he said.

Through participating in these races, Tokarz has done more than improve his health and lifestyle, he has also contributed more than $1,000 to local charities.
